FAVORITE CHILDREN’S BOOK
It changes from month to month. Right now, the boys are enjoying Caps for Sale. I’m trying to get them hooked on my favorite Harold and the Purple Crayon, but they’re not biting. Their super-favorite, however, is whatever book they’re holding while on the toilet.
HOW DO YOU COMBINE WORK AND FAMILY?
Our boys are in preschool and both my job and my wife’s job take up a lot of time. We have every minute of the day scheduled — not rigidly, but there’s no “free time.” We trade duties when needed, sometimes switching mid-duty. It’d be great if we could be a single-income family to allow a little flexibility with the schedule, but that won’t happen until my meth business takes off.
HOW HAS PARENTING CHANGED YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL?
I have many more gray hairs. I also find myself calling people “whippersnapper” and yelling at them to get off my lawn.
HOW HAS PARENTING AFFECTED YOUR RELATIONSHIP?
While my wife and I have always been pretty good communicators, we’re now really great at mouthing words. I’m sure there’s some clandestine spy agency that will want me for my lip-reading talent as long as the people I’m watching only discuss snack foods and Yo Gabba Gabba.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A PARENT AND WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
My greatest strength as a parent is Couch Fort Construction. My greatest weakness is a hatred of stickers.
WHAT ARE YOUR SPOUSE’S/PARTNER’S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES?
She’s awesome at everything. Seriously, it’s annoying how good she is.
WHO ELSE PROVIDES CHILDCARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN?
We have a sitter who the boys have known since they were a few months old. Her daughter usually accompanies her and we recently gave the daughter a solo shot at babysitting. (It went swimmingly.) My mother-in-law and father-in-law also help out every now and again. All of these childcare solutions are much better than my original idea to use a chicken coop.
WHAT IS YOUR WORST PARENTING MOMENT?
I’m going to have to go with 2009.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST PARENTING MOMENT?
I once saved my boys from the path of a runaway horse. Totally true, though not as dramatic as I make it out to be when I tell that story. If I had to pick another, less action movie-esque moment, I’d say my best parenting moment is any time I make my boys laugh.
