FAVORITE CHILDREN’S BOOK
With kids ages 13 and 12 it’s hard to remember which children’s books were most loved by all. We were avid bedtime readers, and my husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed that time with our kids. The one series that comes to mind is the Little House on the Prairie series. My daughter and I read them together (I had read and loved them as a child), and we still refer back to the stories in the book as references for life in the old days and comparisons to our high-tech modern lives. Just last night she asked me if Laura had ever eaten beans for dinner (which we were eating, but my husband’s Brazilian ‘feijao’) with her prairie chicken and cornbread. I had no idea.
HOW DO YOU COMBINE WORK AND FAMILY?
Complicated does not begin to describe our lives as parents. I work three days at a corporate job and two days following my passion and building my own practice. My husband is a gigging musician in NYC and doesn’t have a schedule. So the ‘schedules’ in our house change from moment to moment, but somehow it always seems to work out that one of us is around or we can call on a friend for help. Thankfully our kids are now old enough to get to school themselves and don’t need as much supervision.
HOW HAS PARENTING CHANGED YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL?
Parenting has made me a much less judgmental person. It’s a humbling job.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AS A PARENT AND WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
My strengths are listening and supporting, my weakness is worrying too much about how they’ll turn out.
WHAT ARE YOUR PARTNER’S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES?
My husband is not great at discipline, but is very good at keeping things fun.
WHO ELSE PROVIDES CHILDCARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN?
WHAT IS YOUR WORST PARENTING MOMENT?
Any and all moments when I take my stress out on my kids.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST PARENTING MOMENT?
The times when my kids confide in me and let me into their ‘inner’ world. Second best moments are when I hear from other parents what great people they are, or when I’ve been able to help them overcome a fear or anxiety and expand their comfort zones.
